Thanks to all for replies.
It's been almost a month since my post and I have to say that the problem disappeared -- yet again, all on its own. Just as a precaution, I put it in neutral whenever I hit a red light stop; I've noticed that it takes the pressure off the cold engine.
It seems to me that the fuel formulation really IS the cause... it's almost as if my car was "getting used to" the different fuel in the summer; once is does, the idle is smooth as ever.
Just as an FYI, I did try different gas stations (I'm a faithful Shell and Mobil customer), but I think that it's a problem with the area where I live in, not with a specific merchant.
I guess I have to get used to the fact that the problem will reoccur somewhere in May of next year.
