is just the pre DexCool antifreeze that we all used without incident.
It had the advantage of being agressive against rust, but it wore out after 2 years, and was an environmental nightmare. Some say the higher silicone was hard on the water pump seals.
DexCool is "long term", biodegradeable, but has problems in protecting solder joints and possibly some type of seals. It is less agressive against rust, so if any air gets in the system (0xygen) the corrosion can be a problem. Keep your reservoir topped off.
There is lots of discussion on this issue on bobistheoilguy.com, as I found out from this post.
Actually, the picture (thank you Jason!!!) looks IDENTICAL to my reservoir in buildup color and location, and I think I can now safely say that it is the redline water wetter that is the culprit in my case. I can hardly wait to see if the Head Gasket blows early!
Water wetter has had none of this crud in my 9000 after 20k (Green stuff), so my guess and many other posts on BITOG suggest it is a problem mostly with the "OAT" antioxidant as found in DexCool.
I believe I will flush and refill with Dex, and then go to G-05 (Zerex or Mercedes) at 50k.
I'll be doing a UOA soon, and let you all know the results, although I don't expect to find any antifreeze in the motor oil at this point.
All my best, Craig
