Saab's current oil recommendations would supercede the earlier recommendations which are based on mainly using conventional oil. It is especially telling that Saab began using fully synthetic 0W40 oil as their factory fill beginning in Y2K (IIRC).

The most recent specifications for 9-5s is ACEA A3/B3 up through 2003, with GM LL 025A (and a rediculously long oil change interval) added for 2004.

The biggest concern I have is the new ILSAC GF-4 standard, which limits phosphorous (and thus the anti-wear additive zinc dithiophosphate) to .06%, signficantly lower than the .12% commonly used in non-ILSAC grades. Worse, API has agreed to impose the same limit in the new SM specification for those grades covered by ILSAC - this includes specifically 0W20, 0W30, 5W30 and 10W30. Mobil has historically complied with ILSAC GF requirements for their 0W40 oil as well. With Saab having worked through timing chain issues which began in the late 1980s models and reached its climax with the 1990-1994 2.3L motors, I would be reluctant to use oil with reduced anti-wear additives in my Saab. In the past, you could finesse the ILSAC issue by purchasing "High Mileage" oil, which did not carry the ILSAC starburst, at least in part due to higher anti-wear additive levels (Valvoline MaxLife oil contained about .1% phosphorous, versus the ILSAC GF-3 limit of .08%). With API adopting the phosphorous limit, that option will go away.

Bottom line is for now, Mobil 1 0W40 is certainly a great oil to use. M-1 5W40 is possibly even better to use, but it lacks the pedigree. M-1 15W50 has the pedigree, but is a little heavy for year-round use in the North. Amsoil 5W40 has it all - diesel oil toughness and the ACEA and GM LL 025A pedigree. And a price to match.
