Our 2000 lpt wagon had it's turbo exchanged under warranty for the same problem at ~36000 miles. This is common on these vehicles and if you search the posting you will find more examples. It had all the PVC upgrades done first, but due to oil leaks not the blue smoke.
It took it about 6 months to develop an acute problem. I had it in dealearship two times and they could not reproduce it. On the third time I left it overnight. However, at that point smoke occured each time when starting a cold engine. Turbo bearing was diagnosed as defective and the whole unit was replaced. No more smoke now for 5K miles. Repair charge was ~$1200 but was paid under warranty.
I don't know if that contributed to the problem, but I had one oil change done at a quick-change place. I specified 5W30 semi-syntetic, and saw them pour in a Penzoil brand. The smoke started appearing on that oil and only got worst later. That was my first change not done under factory service agreement. I had two more changes done by the dealer before the problem was fixed.
Based on the recomendation from this board, an since I am out of warranty, I switched to Mobil-1 0W40 oil. I am also running Mobil-1 filter because I could not find the Pruolator in any of local stores. Aparently a rebuild/new turbo is a $800 item and fairly simple to replace. I will see if this one outlast the first one.
I must say, our 2000lpt had all the problems mentioned on this list. But thankfully under warranty. We even had a new muffler put in at 28Kmiles even thouh the car never left TX. Currently I have squeaking front bushings on the sway bar. Still deciding if it is worth replacing the bars too with Areo spec and should I attemtp it myself with a car-jack and stands.
