Actually we have always been a few tenths of a mile higher in mpg going from Philadelphia North to either northern NH or Mt. Desert Island in Maine.
I attribute it to hitting the NJ turnpike at the end of the trip and wanting to be done and upping the speed on the cruise.
We have gotten 34-35 mpg for thsi, 1999 2.3 wagon, gearshift.
But the first two winters we had the car we wnet with the ski rack on with X-C skis (we rent now), and mpg was only about 30. Traffic problems only accounted for part of that.
Anything up there, even just the cross-bars with no load, is major wind drag. The ski racks are vertical. And a bicycle is a giant obtacle re drag.
