I see quite a number of low mile (30K- 40K) 9-5's with new turbochargers - the classic 'startup puff of smoke.' Folks don't seem to be too concerned, as most get replaced under warranty. I've seen a few on dealers lots with startup smoke, and some of the private sellers talk about fresh turbos.
Doesn't this seem a bit strange? Turbo replacement on the 9000/900 range was rare, and almost unheard of at such low mileage. And what does this say about longevity? If the first turbo dies at 40K miles, wouldn't one assume that you'd be in line for the next one around 80K, well out of warranty? Folks complain about the DI dying, mostly because it can strand you, but 3 or 4 turbos in the life of the car seems to be extreme.
Any thoughts as to why turbo seals have become so fragile?
