I hadn't realized there was a correlation between failure of these two parts (other than that they both fail way too often). There apparently is a correlation between a DIC giving out and simultaneous failure of the catalytic converter due to unburned fuel being dumped into it when the the DIC dies. Is it possible your dealer didn't want to spend the time figuring out whether it was the DIC or the TB that went bad, and told you you needed to replace both?
I certainly agree that the sudden and unpredictable stalling of the engine at cruising speed is a safety issue. Who could argue oitherwise?
