Brake Fluid Change

As part of my DIY 60k mile service, I just started flushing the brake fluid on my '00 9-5 and noticed that the fluid dripping from the resevoir cap (apparently the cap has some kind of filter in it?) is a VERY dark black color. Is this common? I would have assumed it would be the same color as the brake fluid, however it is significantly different. Any insight would be appreciated
