If you change the driver side temp and the passenger side temp does not also change, is that not by definition dual-zone? It wouldn't make much sense to me to have the system operate as single-zone until the driver touches his/her temp control, then switch to dual-zone.
For what it's worth (not much), here's how I think they should have done it:
Mode 1) No passenger: System operates as single-zone controlled by driver temp control. Passenger temp display is dark. If someone touches passenger side temp control, then dual-zone is temporarily activated until next power down.
Mode 2) Passenger: System operates as dual-zone like it currently does.
In addition, I would have liked to see a button to manually select single or dual zone operation. I've seen other cars which have this.
