I think its worth considering AWD vs. FWD. I own a '99 9-5 SE wagon and a 'old' '93 Subaru Legacy AWD Turbo and the difference between the two cars in really tough winter weather is remarkable. The Subaru has no difficulty starting from a comlete rest on an 18% grade (my hill) in six inches of wet snow. In the Saab, I have to get a running start and pray I make it (and thats with four studded snows on the Saab and twenty years of Maine winter driving experience)
We love our Saab - it is great for long trips - comfortable, quite quick, safe and fairly quiet. BUT when the snow is flying and I'm on the road, I would choose the Subaru.
The only other concern is reliability. Outside of routine maintenance, I have had to do nothing to the Subaru after 11 years and 120K miles - the Saab, on the other hand, has required turbo replacement at 45K, and several other costly items ulckily covered under warranty.
That's my two cents worth.
