AM Radio static - shouldn't antenna NOT be grounded?

I have an 04 Aero wagon and I have brought the car to 2 different dealers to see what they can do to fix AM radio reception which is very staticy day or night. When I am around power lines and I step on the brake, the reception turns into pure static on a very strong signal station. Also, ocassionally, I can hear the engine revs coming through the speakers on accelleration.
First dealer said they pulled head unit and checked connection to antenna and claimed it was "much better" now.
Second dealer said they had to add another ground wire to the antenna and claimed it was "much better" now.
I always thought that having the antenna grounded was a problem???
After second dealer, it does actually sound a little bit worse than before.
Can anyone tell me if the antenna should NOT be grounding at all?
