Yeah, I suspect that this can break in many different ways.
The other poster today listed a part number they replaced that is not part of this crank mechanism but an arm attached to the stepping motor.

I don't know if you are familiar with the 9000 model.
Saab had huge problems with a plastic arm regulating the heat flap in air box and came up with a quick fix.
That fix only worked if the arm was broken in a way I have yet to this day seen.

The way it did break requirered the whole fan housing to be removed (which is way easier than the 9-5).
