front tire wear and alignment question

This Saturday, I put the winter tires on our 9-5 (it's that time of year here), and noticed abnormal wear on the front tires I took off (OE Pirelli P6 Four Seasons). The inside edges of both fronts were scalloped, and the rubber looked torn and shredded in places. I could actually pull a few small (rice-sized) pieces of rubber off. The rear tires were fine. These tires have about 20,000 miles on them, and did not look that way when I mounted them this spring (about 9,000 miles ago). I regularly check the inflation per the door sticker, and we don't drive aggressively at all.
I gather from other messages on this board that Pirelli tires aren't regarded that highly, so maybe this kind of wear isn't unexpected. However, to avoid damaging our Nokian winter tires, I will have the alignment checked. The only Pirelli dealer here is Sears, and although I would like them to take a look at the affected tires, I think I'll take it to an independent shop for the alignment. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions.
