We have run my wife's 2003 95 Aero sedan on 87 octane unleaded regular for a year with good results. Drove it to California last summer and got good gas mileage on regular. No pinging, good acceleration. I don't use Diamond Shamrock regular unleaded in Texas though because it is 86 octane. I am experimenting with our new 2004 Aero wagon now and see no difference in 87 vs 89 vs 91 octane. No pinging and similar gas mileage.
I talked to the maintenance guy at the Saab Aero Academy and he said they only ran higher octane in the academy cars. He claimed that brand of gas didn't matter because "it all came out of the same distribution pipe". But premium fuel was "cleaner" and unleaded regular was "the bottom of the barrel". Hummmm. I'd pay more for cleaner gas or better performance but I haven't seen a difference.
