I've driven both the 4 and 6 cylinder cars, and I've noticed that the 6 cylinder cars are louder during acceleration. I was a bit surprised at the engine noise in the 6 as compared to the 4. Some folks like this, feeling that it sounds more 'sporty.' When you're not accelerating, the 6 cylinder is just as quiet as the 4. So if you're hearing the engine under accleration, that's normal for the 6.

As to the shifting, the transmission will stay in a lower gear longer if you're pushing the gas pedal down harder. If you really lay into the gas, the tranny figures you want to accelerate quickly, so it stays in a lower gear longer, which gives you better power. If you accelerate lightly, the transmission shifts into a higher gear sooner, which saves gas.
