If you have all season tires you could probably survive, but if you have summer tires, you definitely need snow tires. I always had all season tires on previous Saabs, and they were OK. I got the Saab winter tire package for my Aero and until then I never realized what I was missing. Snow tires are great and will get you through almost anything. On the other hand summer tires are totally unacceptable even with a few flakes. I recommend the package that Saab sells, alloy wheels with mounted winter tires for about $900, which is the same price as the alloy wheels alone. They are 16" so you won't have to worry about potholes, and your summer tires will last longer.
