...as a loose gas cap. The most common cause of a check engine light, and the only one you can really do anything about, is a loose or missing gas cap.
If the car still runs fine then there's no panic getting to the dealer. Re-tighten the gas cap and give it a few days and it make take care of itself. You'll never do any damage to anything because the check engine light is on. The lights on because of an electronic fault, which in many instances will reset itself and the vast majority of the time the vehicle continues to run fine. There are times when the CEL will put the car in "limp home" mode, reducing power, but if it does that you'll know you need to visit the dealer right away. Otherwise give it at least a chance to rectify itself.
