Question on buying my first 9-5

Hello guys (and ladies),
This forum is a wealth of information and I'm very greatful to have run across it. My question is fairly simple I guess, but I suppose the answer may be more complicated (and open to opinion).
I'm considering buying a 2001 9-5 SE V6 around 50k miles. (Also looking at a similar 2002)
My question is, whether or not either of these are good choices when you consider the following... Neither are certified and as you can see they are either out of factory warranty or soon will be. After reading this forum, the whole DI problem seems kind of overwhelming, and with the 60k maint check aronud the corner...
Is it necessary to go certified or get a good extended warranty? Or are maintence problems typically infrequent? What would you recommend to someone who is planning to spend around $14,000 - $16,000 on a new 9-5? What about pre-purchase inspections, anything in particular that should be looked at for wear?
Thanks for your help everyone! :)
