The lights from the gauges, especially if they are on their brightest settings, will cause your pupils to narrow, thus making your view of the road ahead less than it could be. Turn off the gauge lights, and your pupils aren't impacted by the gauge lights. I use the night panel all the time and find it to make a distinct difference in how well I can see.
On my 2002 9-3, if the fuel was low, the only light that came on was the fuel gauge. Haven't had the opportunity to see what happens on my new 2004 9-5, but it wouldn't make much sense to have both the temp and the fuel gauge come on when temp is normal and fuel is low.
