You will need ramps, there is simply too little space under even a base model 9-5 to do this work without them. Rhino Ramps are light(plastic), strong, and can regularly be found on sale for under $25.
You will need a 6-point 13mm socket to remove the drain plug. DON'T USE A 12-POINT! The drain plug will round off and you will find yourself in a real pickel if you use a 12-point wrench.
You will also need to purchase a new copper washer for use on the drain plug. Saab recommends a new one with each oil change but I flip it over and get two changes out of each washer without any leakage. Site sponsors sell these for about $0.60 each, a bag of 5 will last a long time. Someone said they buy equivalent washers in the plumbing section of Home Depot (or similar) for even less but I haven't found them there.
The filter is easy to access,, it sits sideways along the radiator side of the engine. A filter wrench which grabs the bottom flutes of the filter cannister works great but test fit the wrench with your new filter in the store. I slide a sheet of aluminum foil under the filter and above the plastic stone shield to direct watse oil into my drain pan when removing the filter.
Buy quality synthetic oil, quality oil filters, and change your oil regularly. Purolator Pure One, Saab, AC/Delco, Mobil 1, are all very good to good filters - avoid Fram. I use Mobil 1 0W/40 with AC/Delco PF53 filter every 5,000 miles.
Clean and Re-Gap your plugs and add a can of Techron fuel system cleaner at each oil change too. Replace your plugs every 10,000 miles (less than $2 each), and follow Saab's recommended maintenance work for the 30,000 and 60,000 mile intervals.
Enjoy your car.
