A couple of points:
1. We should hear the point of view from some of our mechanic's that post.
2. My experience with a 2000 Jeep Cheerokee. The extended warranty for 36K addit'l miles was approx $1200 US. I purchased for my son in college approx 500 miles awary (Norhtern Maine). During the warranty, only the alternator was replaced ($400). I got peace of mind. Ins co got $800.
3. I've owned my 99 9-5 SE V6 for 18 months. I suspect the warranty would have been approx $1500. I've repaired the water pump ($75 new), power steering pump ($75 used), ABS module ($150), timing belt tensioner ($250), fuel tank (SAAB warranty, or good will?) fuel filler neck (warranty), timing belt (SAAB), front & rear brake pads (<$125), several oil changes, anti-freeze and brake fluid (chump change), and blower motor ($50 used).
4. With the exception of the timing belt (special cam holding tools required), I've done all the work myself. If not, my costs would be significantly higher.
I was lucky with the tensioner replacing it before it failed and destroyed the engine.
Bottom line, I think that so far, knock on wood, I've come out ahead. I have one hell of a car to drive.
I sure others have just as compelling stories in favor of warranties.
