Here's some info ,in the US
most Radio's from 1985 to 1998 , which is 900 ,9000 needed a 4 digit Code ,the code was supplied on a security code card. You can get the code by calling a Saab Dealer by give them the model number of the radio and the serial number. The radio would work in any car if you had the right code.
On the 9-2,9-3,9-5 cars used a network system , where the radio is married to your car ,this being done with a tech 2 tool. once married you could remove your radio or disconnect the battery without having to re do anything , the cars internal system knows its married to "that" radio
if you change your radio ,your old radio does not "have" to be divorced to replace it with a different saab radio , but if you want to sell your old radio if you dont divorce it the new buyer cant use it. I once posted a way of fooling the car and tech 2 tool but have never done it myself yet.
