American cars have by design been running hotter than any Saab and Volvo for many years without really having any problems.
As an interesting quinky dink
2 weeks ago I had my neighbors 1999 Jaguar XK8 Conv (70K on the odo) in for valve cover gaskets. He just recently bought it.
When I lifted the valve covers it was just thick of sludge on the camshaft train.
I had to drop the oil pan to clean out and take the timing cover off beacuse I found out that the timing chain and guides goes bad on ALL Jags from 97 to 2001. Sure enough this engine had all the chain guides cracked.
But I also found out from an TSB that Jaguar had sharpen the requirements on the oil due to problems.
Another quinky dink.
I have a 2000 Volvo S80 90K on the odo in right now with both turbos bad and the oil pan full of sludge.
Since these customers are first timers and without any oil change history it is difficult to really say why, but it sure looks strange compared to 10 year ago when it was very rare to see an engine like that.
