Here is a clarification:
I love my Saab wagon. It is a pleasure. But I couldn't possibly afford a new one, so I bought mine used--52k when I bought it, not in warranty. Since purchasing in Sept. of '03 I've put 10k miles on the car and replaced:
rear shocks
direct injection cassette
water pump
front shocks
alternator
The turbo is troubled (on-again, off-again boost) and will probably need to be replaced.
When I say it's not a cheap of trouble free car it's because parts are expensive and I've had to replace a lot of them.
That said, this is a car that I love. It is a pleasure to drive, from the little details (the one-finger operation smoothness of the variable speed wiper delay control) to the big items (the most comfortable seats I've ever been in--grew up driving Volvos and Hondas, most recent car was Subaru Legacy wagon). It handles beautifully for a station wagon. The mileage is excellent on the highway for a car of its size and zip. As implacable at 90 mph (a friend told me) as at 55.
I paid $15.5k for my car, which I think is a really great price for the car I have, though more than, say, a Subaru wagon of similar vintage.
By the way, the Saab drives better in the snow than my AWD Subaru ever did. Obviously can't charge up hill with the same aplomb, but just driving on slick roads it's much more solid, tracks straighter.
And it's safe. That was a major consideration, as my kids spend a fair amount of time in that back seat.
Think that about sums it up, and justifies my contention that it's not the cheapest or most trouble-free car on the road. But it is to me far and away worth it.
