soft 9-5 suspension

I've recently purchased my fourth - and most disappointing - Saab. It's a 2000 linear wagon with the 5 spd transmission. Comfortable, great ergonomics, a DI casette that went out at 38,000mi. All the usual Saab stuff.
The problem - a soft and floaty ride, not "connected" to the road at all. Soft springs, shocks that absorb only big wallows, and steering that has a very inprecise turn in. Much different than my 1986 9000T which, at 225,000mi still handled better than the 9-5 at 40,000.
Tires are Bridgstone Turanza's at 34psi.
I'm thinking of replacing the shocks (aftermarket Konis or stock from the Aero).
It probably isn't worth trying to re engineer the whole suspension (springs, shocks, sways, bushings, etc) to turn the car into something that it may never be, but I'd really like to do something about the "floating" feeling.
Any experience out there? Is my 9-5 the only one that has morphed into a Buick? Shock upgrades?
