well if your alternator spins smoothly and quietly it is probably the regulator that is bad. you can take the two bolts/screws that hold the regulator to the alternator out, and then just pull the regulator out. Look at the brushes, they are usualy worn down to nothing, or stuck stuck in a position that does not allow them to contact the armature. If it is a bad regulator, a new one will run you around $50.....much better then $150 to $300 for a rebuild/new alternator.
