Here's what I did on my '89 SPG. You can replace the water pump without moving the A/C compressor. You have to do a lot by feel:

Get a long-handled 3/8" ratchet with a pivoting head. It's very handy for getting to things like alternator pivot bolts, water pump pulley bolts, and water pump bolts. It also gives you some extra leverage when you need it. About $20 @ sears, cheaper at other places.

Get a tube of Locktite 518 for sealing the gasket. About $15. Worth it.

Drain the cooling system.

Loosen the waterpump pulley bolts from the right side. Don't take them off yet. If you have thin arms, there's just enough room to get in there.

Loosen the alternator pivot bolt and rotate the alternator out of the way. (there are a couple of other alternator bolts to loosen to do this.)

Take off the A/C idler pulley.

Take off the water pump pulley.

Remove the 5 waterpump bolts from the right side of the car. Tap on the water pump to loosen it and remove it.

Clean off the water pump mating surface on the engine. I used steel wool to get as much of the remaining gasket material as I could.

"Glue" the gasket onto the water pump with the Locktite and put another layer of it on the other side of the gasket. That fills the imperfections in the mating surfaces.

And, as they say in the old country, installation is the reverse of removal.

It's a little tricky getting all of the belts back on, but that's the same as doing it the other way.
