Gentlemen:
Thank you for your help. I read and re-read your insights. The Saab in questions turned out to be a 9000 not a 900...serious rust concerns on the underside...the guy thought I was nuts looking under the car.... and really spiffed up for the sale. The transmission and clutch had never had any work and I just thought that there were too many things to go wrong...I declined the opportunity. Thinking I was pretty darn wise I looked at an 89 Jetta that had been serviced at the dealer since 95...I checked the service records, I looked the car over, but did not have my daughter with me to drive the 5 speed and since I was downtown Seattle I was afraid to drive it with my rusty manual transmission skills......so I had the owner turn off the radio and drive up and down the hills of Seattle. It seem to drive like glass...no racing RMP's-very smooth, tires were new, inside worn but seemed well taken care of otherwise, I agreed to buy it on Friday but they had to deliver it to me in Seattle (I commute on foot) after school so my daughter could drive it......I arranged for my daughter to be at my office at 4:00 p.m. but the selling couple could only coordinate at noon......

OK here is the bad part.....trusting my instincts I bought the car at noon...left it parked near the ferry terminal. At 4 my daughter picked up her car......so very excited.....drove on the ferry, off the ferry and within 7 miles the transmission went out. Ouch. Yes, I know...you can't tell me anything I haven't told myself......beginning with stupid. The car has since been repaired by a trusted local mechanic who advised me that the clutch was completely warn out....shiny rivets and recently adjusted.......did they know???? I thought so...but I had a really tough time believing that anyone could let me put my daughter in a car if they knew the clutch was on the verge of going out.......Look for my miserable....help someone else from being so stupid-story on Car Talk. Click and Clack were gentle but not especially sympathic.....you guys were just great...but I still have a lot to learn and a much leaner grocery bill for the next four months....Thanks again, I could hug you all.
