Yesterday, I just about got stranded going to work. My 1989 900S w/3 spd auto just about died on me.

It was in drive but would barely crawl. I was able to drive at about 30 mph until I got home, and it did eventually shift into 2nd, but never third. I didn't have time to check anything as I was going to be late for work, so I jumped in the Viggen and left.

Of course I was asking a lot of people about it at work, and most everyone said that they thought it sounded like the fluid was low. I had checked not too long ago, but had hope that that was all it was. I got home, and the fluid was a little low - slightly below the "min" line on the dipstick, but nothing that I thought would cause the problem I was having.

I drove the car around the block, warmed it up good, then added the fluid to the 'max' line. Here's the strange part: The thing now shifts, but at almost EXACTLY 1000 rpm higher than it did before the problem! Under normal acceleration, it isn't shifting into 3rd until 4K rpm! I actually like that better under most conditions, except when you are only lightly accelerating, then it kind of worries me.

Is it going? Gone? Is it just shifting correctly now? I always thought before it would shift too soon into 3rd gear. Does anyone else have auto tranny cars? If so - what are some typical shift points that you are getting?

Like I said, it is working now, just shifting at a higher RPM!

thanks in advance,
Rob
