Andy,
Sounds like you have a pretty good car, although the year will make a big difference, especially regarding the brakes.
There is a paint which is made for the flexible moldings. In the U.S. it's sold in most auto parts stores. Hopefully it's available on your side of the pond.
Cruise problems are usually leaky vacuum lines or mis-adjusted switches at the clutch and brake pedals. The Bentley manual will show the proper adjustment.
If your car is post-1988, the rear brake pistons must be retracted by means of a screw. If you forced it you might have done some damage. I've had an e-brake cable hang up, resulting in one pad wearing down prematurely.
In addition to the Bentley manual, townsendimports.com is an excellent resource for the DIY'er. There is an excellent section on the brakes.
