85 SAAB....CI with Lambda
Couple of fuse to check....fuse#22 for the control circuit to fuel pump relay....fuse #30 which is the main power for the pump motors.
when key is turned to start or run position power from ignition switch via green/white wire from switch terminal 15 come out to engine compartment via red firewall connector left of drivers steering wheel thru pin #28.
Power then goes to fuse 22 then to coil of pump relay via pin 15 on relay.
This coil activation pulls in realy which closes fuel pump relay power contacts via relay pins 30 and 87. Relay pin 30 gets power from fuse #30.
Output pin of fuel pump relay (87) has grey/red wire which goes all the way back to pump in trunk. Pump connector is two prong...with the + grey/red wire and a black wire which goes to the car body. This connector should have 12 VDC across the connector when key is in start or run positon. This would be first step.....If you have this...then next step would be to check out if you have a problem with one of the two pumps which is connected in parallel to this connector. This is referred to as the main pump and the prepump. Prepumps are about $23....the main pump is about $185. Bad prepump can give bucking at highway speeds but it may run ok at idle....main pumps will give whine noise for many years before failing...To go into there...you need an open space...idealy low gas level (but not absolutely necessary....disconnected battery....remove the fuel line and move to the side....disconnect electrical connector...undo rubber bellows clamp...raise pump(s) out slowly and let fuel drain out of plastic interstage tank....you will see prepump clamped to lower section....main pump is just pressed into rubber bellows.....if replacing main pump the height of the pump in the bellows is critical for proper positioning so suction line is just above bottom of tank...if you need I have dimensions....careful of the terminals on the prepump....they break easy..
