I've had one of these for about 12 years. Tho I've barely used it in the last ten, because of one of it's drawbacks... You need to do the testing on a level, flat road for accurate results. Not sure if Vericom still makes em, but there are others available. Tesla electronics offers their G-Tech. It's $140 from Summit Racing.
As -M- stated, it's basically an accelerometer and timer. It measures acceleration (g forces) and can calculate hp if you enter in your cars weight. It gave believable numbers when used on my 79 Regal Turbo (240 hp), and my '66 Buick GS (350hp). Also achieved over 1 G when launching my GS using slicks! 8) It also gives the speed at which peak hp is produced. Can be very usefull if you do some aditional number crunching.
It also has the capability to select the testing range, based on mph. So I did most of my test and tuning from say, 30 mph to 60 mph. This would cover the rpm range in second gear (3 spd auto) and would eliminate variations due to wheelspin (usually!) and shifting.
Hey Monster! thanks for mentioning it, I forgot I had one! I haven't used it on my SAABs yet- should be fun! Now if it would only stop snowing....
