If valves are bent, repair cost will be much greater than $1000. As a question of interest, how long had the car been left parked (not driven) before you bought it? I'm suspecting that the chain tensioner was not working correctly - I think the tensioner is actuated by oil pressure and may have stuck if the engine had not turned over for many days/months. I had a similar problem in a NG900 last year & car was parked for several weeks while I was in hospital and recovering.
