I converted my 1986 900S 16V to 134A refrigerant when my compressor went bad. I drained the refrigerant oil out of the newly purchased compressor, and then added it back to make sure the correct amount was in the compressor. Then, I installed the compressor in the car, and replaced the filter/dryer. I also removed the inner check valves from the valve stems (used two small nails and a pair of plyers) on the hoses near the compressor, and then screwed on the new fittings that work with R134 refrigerant - don't screw these on too tight - the fittings are brazed onto the tubing and easily crack. Regarding the suggested replacement of the o-rings, I did do this, but broke a few fittings in the process and had to replace some hoses. I was later told that the o-rings do not really need to be replaced, so maybe you do not need to change them. Once the new compressor and filter dryer are in, I took the car to a local shop and had them evacuate the air from the AC circuit. Then you can recharge your system with R134 refrigerant. You mentioned checking operation of the compressor clutch; I belive you need to develop pressure inside the compressor before the clutch will engage, so I'm not sure you can test it without the belt (i.e. without the clutch spinning), since the compressor develops pressure through rotation. Note - when I bought a replacement compressor, it came with a pulley/clutch, but it was a double belt pulley and I needed a single belt pully, so I had to switch it over (requires a pulley puller and snap ring plyers).
