Thanks for your information about this wiring issue. My 1985 900T wires are doing exactly what your's are. I found the insulation coming off certain wires (color dependent?) in a harness, at locations similar to what you found. The "glue" theory makes a lot of sense, since the wiring insulation that came off is often very sticky - not always brittle as it might be from high heat or age. I have been doing what your mechanic is, splicing in new wires whenever possible. I think that's the best approach. Make sure that the wires that he's replacing actually are used - many of the wires that were bare or losing insulation were not being used (they dead-ended) so I removed them. Good luck.
