... some used car dealers are exceptions, but by and large, they earn their dodgy stereotype. If I were you I would immediately get my money back (by whatever means necessary) and walk. No matter how much you like this car, chances are you're getting yourself into a mess. As has been noted, a dealer won't sell a car at half it's blue book retail unless they know it has issues... and big ones at that.

Seek legal advice before canceling a check. In TX it's a felony to cancel a check if you have taken ownership of the vehicle (have you transferred the title already?)

I think you were taken advantage of particularly because you're a young female. I also think that your average used car dealer is adept at taking advantage of just about anyone. From the comments you pass on ("I'm losing money!") this guy sounds like your average used car dealer.

In the future, may I offer one piece of advice that can save you tremendous unhappiness? Take any used car you are considering buying to a qualified specialist for a pre-sale inspection. On a Saab that means take the car to a qualified independent Saab mechanic.... or a dealer if you can't find one of those (unless of course it's the dealer you're buying the car from). Drop $100 and tell them to go over the car with a fine toothed comb. Have them drive it. Find every problem you possibly can before you lay down your cash. The added benefit is that you learn about a mechanic and whether they're trustworthy for future maintenance of that vehicle. Don't trust a dealer who won't let you take the car to an outside mechanic of your choice... "Our mechanics have certified this car with our wonderful ##-point inspection"... B.S.

Don't let dealers or sellers in general intimidate you, overwhelm you, or confuse you. You are the customer. If someone isn't willing to take the time to be honest, straightforward, and patient with you, they sure as heck aren't above robbing you blind. And they're bad businesspeople. Car dealers are fully aware of the fact that most people are ignorant to the workings of these machines, and at the same time utterly dependent upon them for daily transportation. These combined factors allow dealers to be relatively poor salespeople and still make a living. Educate yourself and force the seller to play fair.

By all means, this bulletin board is the greatest resource I know of for the Saab owner. Use it and give back to it by sharing what you learn.

Good luck,

'Roo
