I'm in the market for a '91 Saab , and I went to look at one over the weekend. There were a few things I noted the I need some input on.
First off let's note that all the maintenance records seem to be present, and overall the car looks o.k., and has had regular service. Also, it is a 900 base model, 100k, with airbags, a/c, am/fm cassette, pb, ps, rw-defrost, and tinted glass. Pretty much a plain jane.
The questions I have are:
- The steering wheel is loose in its yoke. It's like whatever bracket that fits between it and the dash is missing, and I can wiggle the column around in a small circle as a result. It has airbags, and the light activates momentarily upon start up.
- The front shakes during acceleration from third through fifth. Doesn't shake when coasting, no whine can be heard, and no clunking/grinding. Service records indicate that the front shafts have been replaced twice previously over the life of this car. The current owner just had the passenger side replaced to fix it but to no avail. Nothing in this group indicates that to be a trouble area, so I don't know what to think.
- The A/C is weak, the 2nd radiator fan only worked once briefly when a/c was turned on, and the blower fan inside the car works on high regardless of the switch position. Maintenance records indicate that the radiator fan has been replaced twice and several things have been replaced on the a/c system. I know that the a/c is generally weaker in this model car, but is there something I can do to improve it? Can it be switched over to the new freon?
- I'm in the Houston area. What should I offer for this car? I have not gotten a mechanics inpection yet, (nor a title search) but I will should I decide to get this car.
Thanks!
Fred
