If the needle twitches all the way to empty, you've probably got a loose connection somewhere. It's likely to be either the plug connector on the sender unit, or the ground connection (wire from sender unit to ground).
The sender unit is under the floorboards in the back of the car... click on "More from Monster" above, then keep clicking "Next 50 Posts" until you work your way back to my post of 6 October. There are instructions there for how to find and replace the fuel sender. You don't need to take your old one out, but you can perform the test (short the connector and see if you get a steady Full indication) to see if your sender is the culprit. You might even want to take it for a test drive around the block with the connector shorted to see if the needle twitches from the Full indication down to empty. If it doesn't, then the sensor was the problem. (It might just be you need to clean the contacts on your sender and re-seat the plug.) If you still get intermittent empty readings driving around with the connector shorted, your problem is elsewhere. If the wire to ground intermittently opens, it can cause your problem, so the grounding point would be the next thing to check if it's not the plug or the sender unit.
Good luck and let me know what you discover.
