the "disc" located at the elbow of each fitting is a one-way diaphragm valve that prevents backflow. The idea is, when you hit the wiper/washer lever the fluid is 90% of the way to the nozzle already. Without the valve, the fluid tends to drain back and therefore needs to be pumped all the way back the length of the tubing - takes longer. No biggie, just convenience :o) However, I've heard it said that the extra time of wipers running across dry glass leads to more scratching, but who knows.
Part is ~$4 each at the dealer - after years of looking for a cheap replacement, I just gave in and bought 'em (they had a whole bin full of them!)
