OK without alternator

I have had several opportunities to drive without alternator. Just make sure the battery is well charged. I have driven for more than 20 miles with a 1970 Volvo and a Lancia Thema (Same family as Saab 9000). Try to avoid driving at night because the lights would be a pretty big drain. With my Volvo, the radio started to fade because of low voltage but the car still kept running...

I would never try to drive anywhere without a water pump. Just get a separate shorter belt to drive the pump directly (would be a pain to get on because the alternator is the tension adjusting mechanism) or use the old pantyhose trick. I have tried it but it didn't work that well for me. Maybe you have more luck. Better than nothing.
