Bob M., I had this symptom a few years back, and I couldn't locate the problem neither. However, when I was checking the manifold bolts and I found that one of them had been broken off inside of the head. This caused a leak between the manifold and head, but it was ONLY noticeable when I was under way, and especially during the turbo boost.
I had two choices: either tap the broken bolt while the head was still connected to the block or remove the head at a much greater expense, and then have a tool and die shop tap it out. I first attempted to tap it out, but because of the aluminum head, I decided not to continue with this method. If I broke the tap inside of the head my problem worsen, and I only had one expensive choice left. I developed a jig that allow me to drill straight down the center of the broken bolt, and than over drill it, and installed a stainless steel thread seat, which I got from a tool & die shop. Once completed, this stopped my whooshing. Hope this is your problem, and if it is --- that this helps, and your works out as well as mine did.
