It is a pain if you do it that way. (I did it in a PA rest area. Nuthin' like people looking at this old guy on his back in his old car.) Two things helped me there; I'd replaced the switch a few weeks prior, so I knwe what it and the connector felt like, and the switch was *hot* because the brake lights were on for 2-1/2 hours.
It's pretty well packed with stuff under the dash down there and everything is in the way of the brake switch. When you identify the switch, the best way to get it out is to keep twisting it until the plastic fingers that hold it in break. Pull the connector before you try to remove the switch.
Good luck. If you have the lower dash out, replace as many vacuum hoses as you can.
