killing it slowly?

My girlfriend just bought a 1991 Saab 900 turbo with 37,000 miles on it [yes,it all checks out =)]... To my chagrin,it's a automatic. [1] We were traveling on the thruway yesterday and cruising at about 80 mph. The thing i'm concerned about is that the rpms rested up and above 4grand and the engine sounded like it was "under load". It almost sounded as if it had one more gear to shift down to but didn't. or is this normal?? Should these automatic turbo's be restricted to a top speed of 75mph or is there some adjustments that need to be made so it can sound more comfortable at higher speeds? oh and one more thing...[2] there seems to be no kickdown on the car. we almost got broadsided the other day when we pulled slightly in front of an oncoming car, thinking we would be nimble enough. Yet, the saab hesitated for about the length of time it took to get across the other lane of traffic then finally started to accelerate... what is the causing that!??!?! Please tell me thats not normal, I had a 86 900 that was much quicker than that!!!! HELP!!!!!!!!!!
