Ari is right about how to find TDC, and don't turn the engine with the camshaft!
I doubt you will find out anything "checking" the timing chain. I just went through this. I couldn't find out why my timing mark was fluctuating over 5 degrees when checking with a timing light. Checked the Flywheel and cam timing marks, everything lined up. 2 days later the F-ing timing chain broke! Unless you can see the timing chain is real loose, you hear a chain rattle, or the timing light mark is a blur at idle, I don't know of any signs to look for that mean anything.
You say you have the Bentley manual. It has an illustration of the timing marks on the cams. I think its in the timing chain section. On the bracket holding down the cam, closest to the cam sprocket there is an arrow looking mark. On the cam there is a little notch.
Just got my car back on the road last night!
