The lock and release lever are up by the top of the license plate, but the latch itself is down at the bottom of the hatch. They're connected by a metal rod that loves to fall off.
Do what (no name) suggested. Drop the back seats and crawl in. You're going to remove the vynal cover at the back of the hatch. I haven't done a 900 in a few years, but as I remember, there are black discs around the outside. Turn the 1/4 turn and pop them out. Undo the two bolts holding the grab handle in place. I'm pretty sure that the panel is held in place with snap fasteners up by the rear window - start at one corner and pull straight away.
You'll see the latch at the bottom, and a rod that goes up. Lift up and the latch will release. Open the hatch, and get yourself a drink of water and cool down.
The rod is held at the top with a ball and socket, and the socket is plastic and it like to pull out. Stick it back in and you're good to go.
Good luck!
