Need “How to Adjust Timing for Dummies” info...

Recently, Jouko posted an informative bit on the Performance BB about adjusting the timing on 900T’s, as well as setting timing when using a BTM (http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/performance/index.html?bID=20253).
Bentley is thin in this area. Forgive my ignorance, but I have some really basic questions about timing that Jouko himself doesn’t necessarily have to answer, so I’m throwing them out here for all of you – thanks in advance for sharing your experience! (btw, I have an ’89 900T)
1.) He advised finding the timing marks by putting the car in 5th gear, then rolling it a bit at a time until they appear in the “window”. This is not really feasible for me, because of where I work on my car. Is there an alternative method? I tried using the ignition without success, and with some fear that I wasn’t doing the starter any favors.
2.) Which direction does the flywheel rotate – CW or CCW when viewing it from the front of the car?
3.) I can barely see the “window” with all the hoses, etc. in the general area – do you normally remove some of this plumbing?
4.) How “clean” do I need to mark the 16 deg. notch – precisely, or can I just smudge some crayon/whiteout/etc. on there?
5.) He mentions that, if his memory serves him, to advance the timing, turn the distributor clockwise, counter-clockwise to retard. Can someone confirm this?
6.) Generally, how often does the timing need adjusting?
