The problem with the automatic is that is only has three speeds. The automatic in the Classic 900 (1979-1993, 1994 for convertible) only came in three speeds. The New Generation 900 (1994) had a four speed automatic, but it DEFINATELY CANNOT fit. The Classic 900 is a longtudinally mounted engine, and the engine for the 9000 and NG900 is transverse. A retrofit if theoretically possible, but rationally unjustifiable.

With only three speeds, you're stuck. If you go for a really long third gear for quiet cruising, you'll have a big dead spot somewhere.

If you need or want an automatic, the choice in the 900 is to go with a turbo for the most power, and live with the buzz on the highway.

It's entirely possible to replace an automatic with a manual - folks have done it. It makes sense if the car you have is in really good shape, and you have a donor car available. But unless you presently own a cherry car, In my opinion, it's best to sell what you've got and get buy a car that came from the factory with a manual tranny.
