It could be a noisy fuel injector, sticky lifter, lots of things. I'd put my money on the lifter or fuel injector. Take a couple of feet of hose (I like garden hose) as a cheap stethescope. Hold one end to your ear, and move the other around the engine compartment to isolate the sound. This might be tough with the chain/lifter, because the lifter most likely to be lazy is the intake valve right by the timing chain - it's the most high up, and gets the worst oil feed. But if there's a problem with the chain, you should feel a slight tap on the valve cover itself as the chain goes by, as there is a chain guide on the underside of the valve cover.
But I'd guess injector because it gummed up over time, or valve for a similar reason. It's unlikely that just sitting would cause a sudden problem in the chain.
