I have a Clarion 8"powered sub mounted to the back of the fold-down back seat in my 1988 Turbo 3 door. Helps out tremedously with bass frequency. It is not that intrusive as I have it mounted to the top left-hand side of the rear seat panel.
I tried putting the adapter and 6x9's in the rear as a replacment for the stock 4x10's - but I did not like the way they fit. So I just installed two 6.5 inch speakers in the rear arm rest area. I did it myself. Very easy to cut speaker holes in this panel. Plenty of clearance (mine have a top mounting depth of 2 inches - fairly standard). You could probably fit some 6x9's in there. I disconnected/removed my 4x10's and ran the speaker wire forward to the 6.5" speakers. The 6.5 are cheaper (JBL 3-way for $60 at crutchfield) than any 4x10's and sound much better IMO - and you will have a much tighter bass response when your speakers are mounted in an enclosure like a side panel than just hanging down in open air like the 4x10's. Just my 2 cents, of course.
