Diana,
I understand your fustration. We all wish you the best on you next car purchase. There is a time, when you stop the hemorraging and let it go. I've own saabs for years and do all the mechanical work on it. I am so used to doing it that it feels prefectly normal. My saabs do not brake down often, but when they need some tlc, I just call my suppliers, get the parts and just do the job on a Saturday, and get right back on the road. I understand that not everyone on this board have the desire, or the space to do what I do.
Regarding the $3,000. That wasn't bad. You are happy and the mechanic is very happy. He pays $3k, gets a used engine and tranny for under $1k. He then does some minor cosmetics on it. It will take him a day to do the job. He may even replace the top for under $1k if it is really trash. His cost is anywhere from $4,000 to $5,000. If the body is clean, he can turn around and sell it for $8,000 to $9,000 for a quick sale. If he is well known, such as Roberti, he can hold out for $11,000. Not bad. God, I am in the wrong profession. I have a mechanic friend who does this all the time. A long time customer, spends a boat load of money on the car, and gets frustrated and practically gives it away to my friend. He does alright.
Sorry for the long post. It is just a thought.
Patrick
